February 5 Mid-Winter Report

In the midst of winter with ice coating inland waters and snow forecasts in the weather reports, summer fishing seems far away. This might be a suitable time to take a look at what some captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are doing to keep busy.

Captain Brett Taylor of “Reel Reaction Sportfishing” is certainly not letting any grass grow beneath his feet. To start with, he is a teacher at Central Regional High School. On weekends he is in high demand as a speaker at various fishing and boat shows. He will be doing seminars on trolling motor tactics at the Edison and Atlantic City boat shows. He has been servicing his fishing gear while already booking trips for the upcoming season which will begin for him on March 1 with back water striped bass fishing.

Captain Carl Sheppard, who recently sold the “Starfish” to Captain Max Goldman, reports he is “doing what I love and practicing fishing” down in sunny Florida at Marathon in the Keys. On a recent trip he gave away most of his catch as he boated 25 yellow tail snappers keeping only two for himself.

Captain John Lewis of the “Insatiable” has also been down in the keys “viewing alligators and key deer.” He will be updating various materials on his boat while attending area boat shows. In addition to his boat delivery activities for various boat owners, he hopes to complete a barge sinking on the Little Egg Reef Site.

Captain Max Goldman has been busy preparing the “Starfish,” which he recently acquired from Captain Carl, for the summer’s fishing. Like others, he has spent time in Florida, “fishing and enjoying the warm weather.” He attended the Big Rocks Sports dealer show for Jingles Bait and Tackle, where he ordered a variety of new products for the “Starfish.”
