Now that the classes and training sessions of the Junior Mates Program of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association have ended for 2023, both the captains and mates owe a debt of gratitude to the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club for its assistance and hospitality this past summer.
The Junior Mates Program originally flourished for many years while meeting at the New Jersey Maritime Museum. The graciousness of museum director Deb Whitcraft was greatly appreciated by the BHCFA.
When the chance occurred to make a move to the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club and its location right on the water, the Junior Mates decided to leave the warm atmosphere of the Museum to the larger area of the Tuna Club.
Not only does the new location present multiple opportunities for the vital hands-on instruction for the Junior Mates, the meetings of the BHCFA and its executive board also take place there.
In addition to holding meetings at the Club, the Junior Mates have taken part in some of the activities there such as the annual White Marlin Tournament. Junior mates assisted in many of the chores happening such as securing arriving boats and helping weigh in fish.
The captains of the BHCFA recognize the positive influence the new location has offered and look forward to a continuing relationship. Captain Nick Perello, president of the BHCFA, expressed the feelings of the association captains, “The generosity of the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club has been a big boost to our entire organization and especially our Junior Mates Program. The facilities are perfect for our needs.”
The Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club is located on the bay at 420 North Pennsylvania Avenue in Beach Haven.
