August 18 Association Report

Today, Monday, August 18, Hurricane Erin began disrupting the fishing action for the captains and boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association with strong northeast winds and choppy waters.

Weather forecasts state the storm will pass well off the coast of New Jersey. However, those winds and waves promise to make ocean fishing a no-go until the coming weekend. The time will give the captains the opportunity to prepare their fishing gear for the remainder of the summer and the upcoming fall action.

The Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club held its annual White Marlin Invitational last week, and all indications are it was a great success. The captains and Junior Mates were involved both in participating and assisting with chores.

In addition to the offshore action, the local boats also found decent action bottom fishing the artificial reefs and inshore structure. Captain John Lewis reports he   had several trips last week aboard the “Insatiable” and found steady action on fluke, sea robins, and black sea bass. Although there were many throwbacks, his anglers managed to take home some fish dinners on their trips.

Also fishing the inshore areas with good success has been Captain Max Goldman on the “Starfish.” His anglers have been pleased with the coolers of fluke fillets they take home.

Captain Brett Taylor of “Reel Reaction Sportfishing” reports busy days of fishing with some double and even triple charters. His bay trips are averaging 40-50 fluke per trip with 1-4 fish being keeper sized. On an ocean trip his crew boxed 5 fluke to 25.t-inches along with limits of black sea bass and a triggerfish.
